Who are Domestic Workers in the UAE?

In the United Arab Emirates, employees who are hired to work in the household are called domestic workers.

Entitlements of the Domestic Workers

According to the Decree Law, the following rights are included along with the salary of the domestic worker:

• The monthly salary specified in the contract must be paid within 10 days from the due date.

• One day off per week must be included.

• At least 12 hours of rest per day, including 8 consecutive hours.

• 30 days of paid annual leave per year.

• A round-trip ticket home every 2 years.

• 30 days of sick leave per year.

• The right to keep personal identification documents such as ID cards, passports, etc.

In the UAE, the following 19 types of employees are considered domestic workers and are eligible for gratuity as per the contract:

• Falcon care-taker

• Farmworker/grower

• Gardener

• Guard Home nurse

• Housekeeper

• Housemaid/servant

• Jockey

• Nanny/babysitter

• Personal assistant

• Personal trainer/coach

• Personal/family driver

• Private agricultural engineer

• Private tutor

• Sailor

• Shepherd

• Tamer

• Worker

The gratuity for all these employees is calculated based on the same formula. This gratuity payment helps employees maintain their past service record and also supports them in getting a new job when moving from one employment to another.
