What is Domestic Worker Gratuity?
According to UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022 Concerning Domestic Workers, if a domestic worker completes at least one year of service as per the employment contract, he/she is entitled to gratuity equal to 14 days’ wage of the monthly salary for each year of service mentioned in the contract.
Reviewed for legal accuracy as of July 2026. This content is reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis to reflect current UAE labour law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021) and MOHRE guidance.
How Domestic Worker Gratuity Is Calculated
Domestic worker gratuity uses a simpler formula than standard private-sector employees. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, there is no tiered 21-day/30-day structure, instead, every completed year of service earns a flat 14 days of basic wage.
Step 1 — Daily wage
Daily basic wage = Basic salary ÷ 30
Step 2 — Gratuity
Gratuity = Daily wage × 14 × completed years of service
This flat rate applies for the entire service period, it does not increase after 5 years the way it does under the main UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021), which covers standard private-sector employees.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 2 years of service
Basic salary: AED 2,000
Daily wage: 2,000 ÷ 30 = AED 66.67
Gratuity: 66.67 × 14 × 2 = AED 1,866.67
Example 2: 5 years of service
Basic salary: AED 3,500
Daily wage: 3,500 ÷ 30 = AED 116.67
Gratuity: 116.67 × 14 × 5 = AED 8,166.67
Does the Reason for Leaving Affect Gratuity?
- Contract ended / Resigned (no reason given): Full gratuity applies once one year of service is completed.
- Probation exit: No gratuity, the one-year minimum service requirement has not been met.
- Employer breach: Full gratuity applies; the worker is not penalized for the employer’s failure to meet contract terms.
- Worker breach / Dismissed for cause: Gratuity may be reduced or denied depending on the nature of the breach, similar to gross misconduct provisions for standard employees.
- Dismissed (no reason given): Full gratuity applies, since no cause was established.
How Many Types of Domestic Workers?
In the UAE, the following 19 types of employees are considered domestic workers and are eligible for gratuity as per the contract:

FAQs
Do domestic workers get gratuity in the UAE?
Yes. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, domestic workers who complete at least one year of service are entitled to gratuity equal to 14 days of basic wage per year of service.
Is domestic worker gratuity 21 days or 14 days per year?
It’s 14 days per year for every year of service, with no tiered increase after 5 years — this differs from standard private-sector employees, whose gratuity moves from 21 to 30 days per year after 5 years under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.
Does unpaid leave reduce domestic worker gratuity?
Yes. Unpaid leave days are typically deducted from the total service period used in the calculation, which is why the calculator includes an optional field for unpaid leave days.
Do all 19 domestic worker job types get the same gratuity rate?
Yes — the 14-day-per-year formula applies equally across all recognized domestic worker categories (housemaid, driver, nanny, gardener, etc.).
